Rolling Rectangle Lab【中学1年生 数学】

This time, we are excited to introduce a math class led by one of the first-grade math teachers of the International Advanced Course.

”I want students to experience mathematics as something to be enjoyed, explored, investigated, and truly understood—not simply a series of problems to complete. ”

In line with this philosophy, and to encourage curiosity-driven learning, lessons in the first-grade AG International Class Mathematics course were conducted using an interactive app developed by one of our teachers.

In this lesson, as part of a review of Units 5 (Plane Figures) and 6 (Space Figures) from the course text, students used the app to visualize the path traced by the vertices of rectangle ABCD as it rolls along a straight line without slipping. The goal was for students to recognize that each stage of the motion can be understood as a rotation about a fixed point.

Using the app, students discovered that during each roll, certain vertices move along a circular arc with a constant radius equal to their distance from the pivot. This enabled them to connect the geometric motion to the arc length formula and to understand that the total distance traveled by a vertex can be expressed as the sum of these arcs.

As part of the broader review, students worked at their own pace, allowing them to revisit concepts as needed while practicing fundamental transformations such as reflections and rotations, as well as methods for finding the surface area and volume of three-dimensional figures.

Furthermore, through group work and discussion, students deepened their understanding by considering why these observed relationships hold, rather than simply applying procedures.
