1st Year AG English Students Bring Literature to Life Through “The Great Responsibility Hearing”
AG1 English students recently participated in The Great Responsibility Hearing, an immersive courtroom experience that brought literature to life in an engaging and interactive way. The activity challenged students to strengthen one of the most important skills in English: supporting ideas with strong textual evidence.
Working in groups, students examined different perspectives from the story and collaborated to build persuasive arguments supported by evidence from the text. They were challenged not only to defend their own positions but also to carefully evaluate alternative perspectives, encouraging them to think critically and communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence.
During the hearing, students confidently presented evidence-based arguments, listened to differing viewpoints, and responded thoughtfully to questions from their classmates. Throughout the activity, students remained actively engaged by reflecting on multiple perspectives, evaluating evidence, and exchanging ideas with one another, reinforcing the importance of respectful discussion and logical reasoning.
Beyond exploring literature, The Great Responsibility Hearing challenged students to think critically, communicate persuasively, and recognize the importance of supporting ideas with credible evidence rather than personal opinion. By transforming the classroom into an engaging and interactive learning environment, the activity provided a memorable learning experience while helping students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills that extend beyond the English classroom.
